Be Careful What You Grill This Summer

Thousands of Pounds of Ground Beef Recalled in June 2020

As if fears of COVID-19 aren’t enough to deal with this summer, Americans should also be aware of a massive ground beef recall announced on June 13, 2020.

Lakeside Refrigerated Services has recalled approximately 42,922 pounds of ground beef for fears of E. coli – just in time for Father’s Day cookouts. The potentially contaminated meat was shipped to retailers nationwide on June 1 and affected products have the establishment number “EST. 46841.”

CNN put together a complete, easy-to-read list of recalled products and you can also find more information on the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) website.

Two Beef Recalls in Texas

A Texas company called La Bodega Meat LLC also recalled about 83,038 pounds of raw beef that were not presented for import re-inspection into the United States. This recall took place on June 17, 2020.

Fortunately, no cases of foodborne illness have been reported with either recall.

What To Do If You Purchased Recalled Meat

If any of your beef products were affected by the recalls above, you should throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. Be sure to check your freezer, as much of the meat had “use or freeze by” dates of 6/25, 6/27, and 7/01. Retailers have also been instructed to stop selling potentially contaminated products.

If you ate any of the beef in question, keep an eye out for the effects of E. coli. This potentially deadly bacterium can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms usually emerge 3 to 4 days after exposure. Although most people recover within a week, E. coli can cause kidney failure (hemolytic uremic syndrome) in children under 5 and older adults. If you or a loved one suffers easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Both recalls on this page are Class I recalls, which means:

This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
